The Search for Banksy
For a number of decades, Banksy wasn't just an artist; he was a ghost. A person who was everywhere and nowhere at the same time. Turning a brick wall into a political statement and raising awareness for Palestine under the cover of night. But after a massive investigation by Reuters, the man behind the stencil has finally been identified as Robin Gunningham.
Rumours have circled on the web about Banksy for years. There has been a large amount of evidence gathering, from connecting an old arrest in New York to recent sightings in Ukraine. It has brought the "search for Banksy" to an end.
The world gets a little smaller
We lived in a world where a real-life "superhero" existed concealed by the mask of night. Someone who could bypass security, leave a masterpiece and vanish. By knowing his name, some of that magic disappears.
It’s strange that this happens right as the world loses Chuck Norris. Chuck represented an unbreakable force and Banksy represented an untouchable force. Losing one to time and the other to "facts" makes the world feel a bit more literal, and a little smaller.
Although we now know who Banksy is, his art will forever have a place in history. No matter what we call him, his work remains unchanged. The Girl with Balloon, the murals in Gaza — they haven't lost their edge. He proved that art doesn't need a face to change the world; it just needs a message.
